It helps to have a good sense of design when it comes to a complex renovation. New materials and products add flair but require a bit of research to fit needs and most of all avoid the dreaded “oh, no that don’t fit” surprise. In this renovation it helped to have a client lead the way, buy the product(s) and do some of the heavy worrying for the install at a remote cottage in the beauty of LacLu, Ontario.
We started from scratch tearing the existing bathroom to the studs. Lucky for them their ageless, tech-less, ever-appreciated outdoor privy was called into service once again! The cottage bathroom required the works, new fixtures, flooring and hardware. What a team, everyone pitched in, debated the choices and enjoyed what was required to get the job done. Compromises were made like using the existing wallboard, the client expertly painted, that turned out quite amazing and saved on materials and labor to reinstall. The new shower unit when finally installed was majestic, sleek and added that wow factor wanted after that much effort. But… it didn’t come without a hissup (hiccup) as this unit was made up of three wall panels that should match, but did not come game day. Back to the manufacturer for the right one – delay of play – ten days!
Installing new plank flooring
Upon completing the bathroom, the turn-of-the-century carpet throughout the cottage now looked horrid and the obvious question was flung, do you do flooring? Yes, I do, but I’ve committed to a project for the next week or two. Tell you what, if you can get this carpet pulled up I’ll push hard on my projects and hopefully we can get it in before end of season – go Bombers go! And sure enough they got it done, which I admit was something I didn’t want to tackle. They made a great choice with an extra thick plank that was very nice to work with, had plenty of great features that will last them a lifetime. Next season going to be great!
